Mt.Olol

Mt Ololokwe in Samburu County has drawn national attention after a helicopter crash claimed the lives of all seven people aboard. The aircraft, operated by Lady Lori Kenya Ltd, crashed in the mountainous area while travelling from Soyian-Laikipia to Loisaba Conservancy.

The victims included six foreign nationals and Kenyan pilot Josh Outram. Four Americans, two Ecuadorian nationals and the Kenyan pilot were killed in the accident, prompting a recovery operation in the remote terrain.

Mt Ololokwe is a prominent flat-topped mountain rising about 2,000 metres above sea level near Archer’s Post. Its dramatic cliffs, expansive plateau and surrounding dry savannah have made it one of the most recognisable landmarks in northern Kenya.

Beyond its natural beauty, the mountain holds deep cultural and spiritual importance for the Samburu community. It is regarded as a sacred site where elders conduct traditional rituals seeking blessings, protection and guidance. Visitors are therefore expected to respect sacred areas and seek appropriate local guidance when exploring the mountain.

Mt Ololokwe has also attracted hikers, photographers and conservation tourists because of its panoramic views and surrounding wildlife. The area supports elephants, antelopes, zebras and numerous bird species. Despite the tragedy that has brought it into focus, the mountain remains an important cultural and ecological landmark in Samburu County.
