Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has confirmed that the 20,000 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders distributed to residents of Ol Kalou during the recent parliamentary by-election campaign will continue to benefit households through a government-supported refill programme.
In a statement issued on July 18, Kuria said the cylinders would be refilled at selected retail outlets in Ol Kalou that will be designated by the National Oil Company of Kenya (NOCK). His clarification followed public concern over whether the programme would continue after the conclusion of the by-election.
Kuria, who coordinated government development initiatives in the constituency, also congratulated MP-elect Sammy Kamau Ngotho on his victory and assured residents that all ongoing government projects would proceed regardless of the election outcome.
He listed several initiatives that will continue, including the construction of Nyandarua University, tarmacking of the Ithagani–Nyaituga–Ngorika–Kanyiriti road and the Lake Ol Bolosat access road. He also confirmed that the Nairobi–Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu railway line would continue operating daily for cargo transport and twice a week for passenger services.
Other projects expected to proceed include 36 rural electrification programmes, expanded water connections, distribution of 100,000 avocado seedlings, irrigation under the Gwa Kiongo Dam project, Blue Economy initiatives, affordable housing developments, market modernisation, completion of the Mashujaa Wing at JM Kariuki Hospital, Ol Kalou Stadium, youth employment under the Climate Workx programme and the establishment of ward-based digital hubs.
UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar separately stated that residents would not be required to return gas cylinders, mattresses or other items distributed during the campaign, adding that the ruling party remained committed to completing all promised development projects.
The by-election was won by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Kamau, who secured 35,440 votes, defeating UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,460 votes, according to results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
