Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party leader Moses Kuria has accused the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of breaking election laws just hours before the much-awaited Mbeere North by-election.
Taking to his X account on Wednesday, November 26, Kuria claimed that campaigns for UDA candidate Leonard Muthende were still ongoing despite less than 24 hours remaining before the poll.
The former Public Service Cabinet Secretary also criticized the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for failing to take action, saying he is losing confidence in the commission.
“Despite the 48-hour rule, UDA campaign rallies in Mbeere North continue in earnest. Hapa kwa IEBC, I am losing all hope,” Kuria wrote.
Kuria accompanied his statement with a video showing a group of people gathered, which he alleged was a UDA campaign event.
According to IEBC guidelines, the official campaign period for the various vacant seats ended on Monday, November 24, 48 hours before the Thursday by-elections. Any violation constitutes an electoral offense punishable by the commission.
Kuria’s remarks mirror earlier complaints from Seth Panyako, the DAP-K candidate contesting for the Malava parliamentary by-election. Panyako accused UDA’s David Ndakwa of violating IEBC rules by bribing voters ahead of the poll.
A video circulating on social media shows Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda and others in reflectors distributing blankets and other merchandise to Malava residents.
IEBC chair Erastus Ethekon, who was in Malava on Wednesday to inspect preparedness for the by-election, acknowledged having seen the video but said no official complaint had been lodged. He noted that any grievances must be submitted through the commission’s formal channels.
