A well-known Catholic priest was brutally murdered in Kerio Valley, causing a tragic and dramatic sight that shocked the entire area. Due to growing insecurity, the Catholic Church has since declared that all of its mission stations in the region will be closed immediately.

Unknown assailants ambushed and assassinated the priest, who was well-known for his efforts to uphold local communities and advance peace.

He was on his way to a church meeting from one of the outlying mission locations when the tragedy occurred. According to witnesses, the assailants killed the priest instantly as they opened fire on his car before vanishing into the bushes.

This most recent murder contributes to an increasing number of attacks in the unstable Kerio Valley that target relief workers and religious leaders.

The region has become more dangerous for locals and workers due to an increase in armed violence, cattle rustling, and intercommunal conflicts.

The Catholic Diocese in charge of the area has responded to the murder by announcing that all mission facilities will be temporarily closed and that all church employees will be withdrawn for their own protection.

The Church has called on the government to act immediately to restore calm and save innocent lives, saying it cannot carry on with its mission under continual threat.

“The passing of a loyal servant of God saddens us greatly. We urge security forces to act quickly and apprehend the murderers,” a top church official stated. Human rights organizations and local authorities have denounced the murder, calling it a despicable act intended to silence peaceful voices.

Locals now worry that unless the government sends additional security personnel to pacify the area, things might get worse. While investigations are ongoing, the deceased priest’s body was transferred to a nearby hospital mortuary.
