The former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s offices at Capitol Hill in Nairobi have become a shadow of their former self, with staff describing a deep sense of emptiness nearly seven months after his passing.Once a vibrant hub of political activity, the office regularly hosted influential leaders, diplomats, business executives, and members of the public eager to participate.
However, employees are now reporting a significant change in atmosphere, with the lively interactions of the past replaced by a noticeable silence.
Jack Nyamburi, who served as Raila’s personal assistant, remarked that the absence of the longtime politician has created a distinct void in the office’s daily operations.
He indicated that the once-bustling environment, filled with meetings, phone calls, and collaborative efforts, has now become a quiet space with little engagement.
He described the office as resembling ‘almost like a ghost space,’ highlighting that the number of visits and interactions has drastically decreased since Raila’s last appearance on September 23, 2025, after chairing meeting with the ODM parliamentary group.Florence, a senior administrator with more than ten years of experience in the office, addressed the emotional shifts occurring within the organization.
She noted that the structure and pace that previously characterized the work environment have largely disappeared, leading to a rise in uncertainty and a decrease in activities.
Nyamburi added that interactions with certain political figures have become more difficult, as numerous calls and messages go unanswered, with only a few officials responding occasionally.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged the assistance of Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, who has been aiding staff during this period of transition.
Despite the existing uncertainty, employees remain optimistic about receiving clearer information regarding their future employment status.
