Matthew Kaugiria a lorry driver from Meru, has received praise from Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia after risking his life to protect residents when his hay loaded vehicle caught fire in Meru town.
The driver’s courageous decision to steer the burning lorry towards River Kathita helped move the danger away from a busy residential area.
The incident happened on Friday,October 23 along the Kwa Nthambi–Majengo road, where Kaugiria was transporting a heavy load of dry hay.
The cargo came into contact with low hanging electricity lines, triggering a fire that quickly spread through the dry grass.
The flames turned the lorry into a moving fireball as it travelled along a road surrounded by homes, businesses and pedestrians.
The situation posed a serious danger to residents, with the fire threatening to spread to nearby buildings and other property.
Rather than abandon the vehicle, Kaugiria continued driving in an attempt to move the burning lorry away from the crowded area.
He steered it towards River Kathita, approximately 500 metres away, where the vehicle eventually plunged into the water.
The driver suffered burns to his face and right hand during the frightening incident. He was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment as residents moved in to help contain the fire.
The incident was captured on video with footage later circulating widely online and attracting praise from Kenyans who admired his decision to put public safety first.
Governor Mutuma honoured Kaugiria on Sunday, October 25,following the incident. The county boss praised the driver’s courage and selflessness, noting that his actions demonstrated a strong concern for the lives and safety of other people.
The governor also expressed concern about the injuries Kaugiria sustained while trying to prevent the fire from causing greater harm.He wished him a quick recovery and recognised the personal risk he took during the emergency.
Kaugiria has worked as a driver for 17 years, making the incident a frightening turn in his long experience on the road.
What began as an ordinary working day quickly became a life threatening situation that required him to make a difficult decision.
Following the governor’s tribute,Kenyans online called for further support for the driver. Some suggested that he should receive assistance to replace his lorry or be considered for employment with the county’s fire and rescue services.
However,no confirmed announcement had been made that the county government would replace his vehicle or offer him a job.
The incident has also drawn attention to the risks posed by low hanging electricity lines, especially when heavy vehicles carry tall loads along busy roads.
