Brigadier Mathew Liita Lenamunai, ‘ndc’ (IND), ‘psc’ (K), is a senior officer in the Kenya Defence Forces currently serving as the Lang’ata Garrison Commander in Nairobi. He was promoted from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier in May 2023 and appointed to lead the strategically important Kahawa Garrison, one of the country’s key military installations. His promotion was effected during the tenure of William Ruto as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.
Since assuming command in 2025, Brigadier Lenamunai has overseen operations, logistics, welfare, and training within the garrison. His leadership has involved hosting senior defence officials, including the Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya and the Chief of the Defence Forces Charles Kahariri, during inspections focused on operational efficiency across key Kenya Army units such as the Corps of Transport, Ordnance, Signals, and the Medical Corps.
Beyond operational command, he has championed mental health awareness programs within the Kenya Defence Forces, emphasising stigma reduction and psychological well-being among service personnel, an increasingly critical component of modern military readiness. In welfare and morale-building activities, he has represented the Chief of Defence Forces at major sporting events, including presiding over the 2025 Bora Cup Netball Championship at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, reinforcing the link between discipline, teamwork, and soldier welfare.
Brigadier Lenamunai has also overseen Command Group training programs, including preparations for United Nations deployments and other security-related assignments, strengthening Kenya’s role in regional and international peace support operations.
Academically and professionally, he holds the post-nominal designation ‘ndc’ (IND), signifying training at the National Defence College in India, and ‘psc’ (K), indicating successful completion of the Kenya Staff College course, both prestigious military qualifications that prepare officers for high-level strategic command and staff responsibilities.
In evaluating military leadership, focus rests on operational readiness, troop welfare, training standards, and institutional integrity. Brigadier Lenamunai’s tenure at Kahawa Garrison reflects a blend of command responsibility, strategic coordination, and attention to the human dimension of defence service.
The one-star general had previously served as the commandant, Kahawa Garrison.
