Kenya Military Police

They are popularly known as the “Red Berets” police. They are the discipline wing of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Whereas the KDF enjoy sweeping powers, sometimes it appears as if they are above the law and that they cannot be held to account for their actions.

But many times, the KDF soldiers have been court-martialed whenever they misbehave. But who are these people or officers with the powers to arrest the dreaded soldiers?

There is a specialized unit of the KDF called the Military Police whose main role to enforce discipline within the military. For identity, they put on a red beret.

In the KDF ranks, the Military Police are the disciplinarians who ensure that the soldiers are well mannered and that they do not break the law.

They fellow KDF officers who are educated in matters to do do with law enforcement. That’s why they are feared in the military ecosystem.

Put simply, the Military Police are the police wing of the KDF. They are the prefects of their fellow soldiers. They have the powers to arrest errant members of the force.
