Meet the Kisii second-year university student who was allegedly burned with hot water by her lover based in the United States in an incident that has left many shocked and angered.
The young woman, identified as Mercy Momanyi, is a 20-year-old student from Mosocho in Kisii County.
According to reports, Mercy had been in a relationship for about two years with Sheldon Ombongi Okerosi, a 31-year-old man who lives and works in the United States.
Their relationship was largely long-distance, with Sheldon staying abroad while Mercy continued with her studies in Kenya.
Sources close to the family say Sheldon recently returned to Kenya for a visit.
During his time back home, he and Mercy reportedly decided to travel together to his rural home in Mosocho.
What was expected to be a peaceful visit, however, turned into a nightmare.
It is alleged that an argument broke out between the two while they were at home. Witnesses claim the disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
In the heat of the argument, Sheldon is accused of physically assaulting Mercy before pouring hot water on her.
The hot water reportedly caused serious injuries, leaving her with second-degree burns.
The situation is said to have become even more distressing when Mercy’s mother stepped in to try and calm them down.
According to reports, she too was splashed with hot water during the incident and sustained injuries. Both Mercy and her mother were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Doctors confirmed that Mercy suffered painful burns and required urgent medical care.
Family members say she is still recovering and facing a heavy hospital bill as a result of the injuries.
