Fred Kubai was his name. His birth year was 1917. He was one of the six Kapenguria members who were detained, tried, and imprisoned in 1952 for planning the MauMau rebellion while they were fighting for freedom. In Nairobi, Kubai planned strikes against the European government. He was prosecuted in May 1950 for the attempted murder of a city official and found not guilty.

After divorcing his four wives, Fred Kubai fell in love with his housekeeper Christina Gakuhi. He left a will in 1991 stating that Christina Gakuhi would inherit all of his possessions and that all of the divorcees would have no rights whatsoever. As a telegraphist, he was employed by the East African Post and Telecommunications.

He left his position as a telegraphist and joined the African Workers Federation. He established the Kenya African Road Transport and Mechanics Union the following year. This organization later changed its name to the Transport and Allied Worker Union.
