In a shocking turn of events, a man in England unknowingly spent millions of shillings purchasing a vehicle that had previously been stolen from his own home.

Ewan Valentine, 36, lost his black 2016 Honda Civic Type R after it was stolen from his driveway on February 28, 2025. Determined to replace it, he began searching for another car of the same model and eventually found one that appeared to meet his expectations.

Valentine paid £20,000, equivalent to approximately Ksh 3.47 million, believing he had acquired a replacement vehicle.

The car looked almost identical to the one he had lost, featuring the same colour, model year and customised exhaust. However, its registration plates and vehicle identification details were different, concealing its true identity.

After bringing the vehicle home, Valentine started noticing strange similarities that made him question his purchase. He discovered familiar objects inside, including a tent peg and Christmas tree needles, which reminded him of items from his previous car.

His suspicions grew stronger when he checked the navigation system and found addresses associated with his home and family stored in its history.

Valentine then sought assistance from a Honda dealership, where checks confirmed that the vehicle was his original car. Investigations reportedly indicated that individuals involved in the theft had changed its identifying details to make it appear legitimate.

The man believed that the garage from which he purchased the vehicle had also been misled about its identity. Police and his insurance company were reportedly involved in efforts to address the case and establish how the stolen car ended up being sold back to its former owner.

The unusual incident highlights the risks associated with purchasing second-hand vehicles without carrying out comprehensive background checks. Prospective buyers are encouraged to verify vehicle identification numbers, registration documents and ownership records before making payments.

For Valentine, the search for a replacement ended in an unbelievable discovery: he had paid a fortune to recover a car that was already his.
