A grieving family in Kakamega is demanding answers from authorities after their relative was found dead inside a police cell under unclear circumstances.

The deceased, identified by family members as a father of three, had been arrested just days earlier for allegedly assaulting his wife.

According to police reports, the altercation began after the wife confronted him over his alleged plans to marry a second wife, sparking a heated domestic dispute.

While the family does not dispute that the man was in custody, they say the circumstances of his death raise troubling questions.

“Police should tell us how the suspect was allowed to enter with shoes inside the cell,” a family spokesperson said, suggesting the possibility of foul play or negligence.

According to the family, they were informed of his death hours after it occurred. “We expected to see him in court, not in a coffin,” said a visibly shaken cousin.

The sudden loss has left them reeling, with many demanding an independent investigation to uncover the truth.

Neighbours described the deceased as a hardworking man who had recently been under stress due to family disagreements.

Some recalled seeing him on the day of his arrest, looking frustrated but not violent.

Police have stated that the man was found unresponsive during a routine morning check and was pronounced dead shortly after.

They have promised to cooperate with investigators and conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

As the family prepares for burial, their grief is compounded by the uncertainty surrounding his final hours.

For them, justice will mean not only knowing what happened but also ensuring that no other family endures a similar tragedy.
