Cleophas Malala has once again stood his ground after Rigathi Gachagua publicly dismissed his criticism of the appointment of Dr Mukhisa Kituyi.

 

The Democracy for Citizens Party deputy leader took to X where he said he supports blending young leaders with the elderly. He added that experience is important but maintained that youthful leadership must remain at the center of politics.

“I fully support the decision by my Party Leader and the summit leadership in integrating the elderly for experience and youth for valour, energy and creativity. I however remain steadfast advocating for youthful leadership because youth is what propels nations,” Malala posted.

Earlier in Kipipiri, Gachagua had openly fired at his deputy over Kituyi’s new role as the head of the United Opposition secretariat. He told congregants that Malala was wrong to reject the appointment and explained that young leaders still need guidance.

“I heard him say that leadership should only include young people. But that is not wisdom. We have Gen Z leaders and we know they will do well, but we must find someone with experience to guide them,” Gachagua said.

The fallout began days earlier when the coalition unveiled plans to formalize before the November by-elections and the 2027 General Election. Malala skipped the Nairobi meeting in protest and accused Kituyi of lacking dynamism to represent the movement.

“My position on the choice of the spokesperson is that the united opposition deserves to demonstrate willingness in engaging with fresh youthful leadership that can propel the country to the next frontier of politics and governance, qualities which Kituyi is acutely lacking,” Malala argued.

Despite the dispute, Gachagua reminded supporters that the DCP has free and fair nominations. He urged Malala to calm down and embrace inclusivity.

The United Opposition coalition brings together six parties. Apart from Gachagua’s DCP, it includes Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party, Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party, Eugene Wamalwa’s DAP-K, Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party and the Jubilee Party backed by Fred Matiang’i.

Leaders said the secretariat under Kituyi would strengthen coordination and give the coalition a unified voice ahead of tough political battles.

Malala however insists the future belongs to the youth and continues to push for generational change at the top.
