People living in Mai Mahiu have suffered two bad events in just two weeks. First there was one disaster, and now another has happened too. This time, it was caused by very heavy rains. The heavy rains made floods that swept away many of the roads in Mai Mahiu. The floods were so strong that they destroyed some of the major roads people use to travel around the area. With roads damaged or washed out, it is now very difficult for people to go places.
The floods also ruined crops that farmers in Mai Mahiu had planted and were growing. Crops worth millions of shillings were lost when the rains came and covered the fields with too much water. All of the hard work the farmers did to plant and take care of their crops was lost.Having their crops completely ruined is very difficult for the farmers. They depend on selling those crops to make money to support their families. Now they have no crops left to sell after this flood disaster.
Just a couple of weeks before this, there was another bad event that caused problems for Mai Mahiu residents. It is very unlucky to have two disasters hit the same area in such a short time. The combination of the two events happening one after the other has made things extremely difficult for the people living in Mai Mahiu. Dealing with one disaster is hard enough, but having two strike in just a few weeks is devastating.
Both disasters likely caused damage to homes, businesses and property for many residents too. Having roads unusalable makes it harder to access supplies, medical care, or get somewhere safe. The impact is substantial, with key roads destroyed and incredibly valuable crops completely lost. Millions of shillings worth of crops just got washed away before they could be harvested and sold.
Farmers urgently need support and assistance to recover from this. Otherwise, they have lost all their expected income until the next planting cycle many months away. It will be tough to go that long with no cash from sales. The community had not even recovered from the previous disaster when this second one created by the heavy rains hit. Residents are in desperate need of aid, shelter, supplies, replanted crops and road repairs after this awful double tragedy.
