Residents of Kaathi in Kimutwa Location, Machakos County, were thrown into panic after three men suspected of robbery were lynched by members of the public following a bold supermarket theft.
The suspects are believed to have broken into a local supermarket at night and escaped with merchandise valued at millions. The burglary was discovered the next morning when residents found the shop vandalised and goods missing.
Angered by the incident, locals reportedly launched a manhunt that led them to the suspects’ hiding place. Authorities said stolen items were recovered during the search.
The men were later dragged to Kaathi trading centre, where an angry crowd attacked them before setting them on fire. Police officers arrived shortly after but could not save them.
The bodies were taken to Machakos County Referral Hospital Mortuary as police began investigations. Security officials have criticised the act of mob justice, reminding the public that taking the law into their own hands is illegal and undermines justice. The incident has reignited calls for stronger policing and better protection for businesses in the region.
