Mbavu Destroyer

The deafening roar that erupted inside Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday night captured a defining moment in Kenyan amateur boxing as Portifas Odipo, famously known as Majembe, delivered a stunning knockout victory over the heavily hyped Ferdinand Omondi, also known as Mbavu Destroyer. The 21-year-old from Kisumu, known for his quiet discipline, silenced both his opponent and doubters in a decisive and brutal finish at Vurugu Fight Night.

Majembe’s victory was not just symbolic but historic. He walked away with the Vurugu Championship Belt, over Ksh 2.5 million in prize money, and additional rewards including a brand new Toyota Noah and a sport bike, marking the biggest single-night payday ever recorded in Kenyan amateur boxing. Every reward on offer that night ultimately belonged to him.

The bout had been months in the making, fueled by a social media rivalry between two young men from Kenya’s working-class estates. Promoter Oga Obinna transformed the online feud into a national spectacle, attracting widespread attention and significant financial backing. President William Ruto pledged Ksh 1 million to each fighter and further supported the event by purchasing 2,000 tickets worth Ksh 4 million. Contributions also came from Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri, businessman Oketch Salah, and a private supporter who pledged over Ksh 1.2 million to the winner.

Mbavu captivated fans with an aggressive and entertaining pre-fight campaign that dominated social media, but inside the ring, Majembe remained composed. His focus and preparation proved superior, culminating in a clean knockout that ended the contest emphatically. By the end of the night, the disciplined underdog had not only claimed victory but secured his place as a rising force in Kenyan boxing.
