Paul Simba Arati is the current governor of Kisii county since his election back in 2022 on the Orange Democratic Movement party ticket. What starts unique in him is that he is married to a Chinese wife know as May Arati and she has adopted a Kisii name Kwamboka.
May Arati is slowly learning the Ekegusii language and she now knows the formal greeting in the language and she introduces herself as the spouse of the governor in the local language.
The larger part of her speech she usually uses English and there is usually a translator who makes it easier for her listeners wherever she visits. She has visited one of the grieving families in Nyaribari and her usual translator was not with her something that made a new translator to take up the role.
As the Kisii first lady arrived at the bereaving home, she asked for a translator and one man volunteered to do it, she first conveyed her greetings and introduced herself in Ekegusii and she jokingly asked the translator whether he was doing his role and he had to defend himself saying that all the people had no problem with the local language.
After her introduction, she switched to English prompting the translator to try his new role. May Arati said that she wanted the pastor to know that they spent the day at home where they were hosting many visitors and kept asking when they will get time to visit the grieving family.
The translator did his role smoothly on the first part of the speech but he had to ask May Arati to come up again thereafter after he failed to get one word. The translator’s failure to get the word made May Arati and the rest of the listeners to break into a laughter as he tried to calm them.
