A Ugandan national who gained notoriety for brandishing a machete during violent protests in Nakuru West has been arrested.
The suspect, identified as Hassan Mtimkavu alias Paul Ositi, went viral after confronting armed police officers in London Estate on June 9.
The protests erupted following the fatal police shooting of Daniel Nderitu, a local resident, during a clash with youths.
The confrontation occurred shortly after officers arrested three suspected drug dealers in the area.
Nakuru West Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Kirui confirmed the arrest, stating that Mtimkavu was apprehended in the Hilton area of London Estate.
“Upon arrest, he claimed to be ill and was taken to Nakuru Level Five Hospital under police guard. We believe he feigned sickness,” Kirui told The Standard News paper.
The suspect has since been discharged and is awaiting arraignment. “He will face charges including illegal presence in Kenya, incitement, theft, and robbery,” Kirui added.
According to authorities, Mtimkavu’s actions incited further violence, with protesters looting shops and attacking civilians.
A viral video captured the dramatic moment when Mtimkavu, armed with a panga, charged at an officer armed with a teargas launcher.
Despite two teargas rounds being fired, he continued advancing, even mockingly sharpening the blade on the tarmac. Backup officers eventually forced him to retreat.
The chaos escalated when a bodaboda rider carrying two women attempted to flee through the police line.
An officer kicked the bike, causing the rider to fall. Shockingly, one of the female passengers drew a machete, threatening officers before the trio escaped amid a hail of stones from protesters.
Mtimkavu’s arrest highlights the volatile tensions in the area, with authorities vowing to prosecute all offenders involved in the unrest.
