Chaos erupted near Koja in Nairobi after a confrontation between a university student and police officers turned violent, attracting a huge crowd of onlookers.

According to eyewitnesses, the drama began when an officer attempted to search the student’s backpack, allegedly without giving any explanation. The student, who appeared agitated, resisted the move and a heated exchange followed. Matters quickly escalated when the young man reportedly punched the officer, sending him staggering backwards.

Within moments, several plainclothes officers pounced on the student. They rained blows on him as they dragged him towards a waiting police vehicle, sparking outrage among bystanders who shouted at the officers to stop the assault. Some witnesses recorded the incident on their phones, videos that have since begun circulating widely on social media platforms.

“It was brutal. Even if he was wrong, the way they handled him was excessive,” said one hawker who sells shoes around the busy bus terminus. Others accused the officers of using unnecessary force, noting that the student did not appear armed and was already subdued.

The incident has ignited heated debate online, with Kenyans divided over who was in the wrong. Some argue that the student should not have attacked an officer, while others insist police must respect citizens’ rights and conduct searches lawfully.

By Friday evening, the National Police Service had not issued an official statement on the matter. However, human rights groups have already called for an investigation, warning against normalizing violent confrontations between law enforcement and young people.

As tensions rise, questions linger over how far plainclothes officers should go when enforcing the law in public spaces, and whether citizens truly understand their rights when confronted by police.
