The Kenyan National Examinations Council (KNEC) is to pay teachers and other exam personnel (drivers and security guards) who worked on administering national exams for the year 2025. This payment became possible immediately after the National Treasury released KSH 1.5 billion to issue or settle outstanding payments related to late invoicing for up to 4 months.
The payment also provides relief to the thousands of contracted professional teachers who provided assistance in making sure that all of the national examinations were carried out without any problems. The delay in the issuance of these payments caused dissatisfaction among many teachers, and some of them expressed concern and threatened to not do future examinations. However, the Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, assured all stakeholders that a new strategy has been developed to eliminate such delays in the future.
KNEC would like to clarify to all teachers that they do not receive their normal salary for providing this type of service; however, they will receive an allowance that is paid to them after the examinations are completed and then provided with reimbursement for their transportation costs. It should be noted that teachers who provided services for both KJSEA and KCSE are estimated to receive approximately KSH 12,000.
The Council acknowledged that where payments are delayed or not made at all to teachers, this has been for reasons such as incorrect matching of personal details, incomplete documents or not submitting an attendance register that has been correctly signed and stamped. Teachers have been instructed to ensure that their information in the Contracted Professionals (CP2) Portal is the same as their national ID details and the details they supplied when registering with M-Pesa.
All people who experience non-payment should ensure their CP2 profile has been updated as well as open a new account, if necessary, and contact their sub-county director of education to obtain assistance with resolving document issues.KNEC’s approved facilitation rates are as follows:
KPSEA Invigilators will be paid Sh550 per day for three days, aggregating to Sh1,680. KSEA Invigilators will receive a total of Sh3,300 for six days. Supervisors who are supervising KPSEA and KSEA will receive Sh4,080, and supervisors for the KCSE will receive Sh10,880 for supervising over a 16-day period, and Sh8,800 will be paid to KCSE invigilators.Centre managers will also be receiving facilitation based on the daily rates as published by KNEC.
