A woman from Kirinyaga County is nursing emotional wounds after her marriage ended just a week after her wedding. The woman, Sarah Mwangi, opened up about how she met her now ex-husband through Facebook in early 2023.

Their love story began with online chats and calls. In April 2023, they met face-to-face for the first time. Surprisingly, the man introduced her to his parents during this first meeting. Just two months later, his family visited hers for dowry talks.

By July 2023, the couple had their traditional dowry ceremony, and by September, they were married in a wedding that Sarah fully financed. She paid for everything — the wedding suit, her gown, service providers, and even the honeymoon.

However, during the honeymoon, things started falling apart. The man accused her of mentioning other men in her sleep and became increasingly insecure. Once they returned home, he began going through her phone and accused her of cheating.

One night, Sarah says he slapped her awake and later threatened her with a knife after she changed her phone password. Things escalated on the seventh day of marriage when he allegedly tried to harm her young son using a glass table.

“He lifted the table to hit my child, but it broke and injured him instead,” Sarah said.

After this incident, her family and church leaders advised that the man return to his parents’ home. Since then, Sarah has been living in fear, claiming he keeps threatening her and even shows up at her door late at night.

She has reported the matter to the police and is now waiting for her divorce to be finalized.

Sarah now hopes her story will help other women avoid rushing into marriage with strangers met online.
