Tomato farmers in Kirinyaga have decried overproduction, which has caused them huge losses.
Speaking at Kangai ward in Mwea on Friday, tomato farmers, led by Patrick Mwangi and Richard Kazee, said they have been unable to find market.

The farmers said they are selling a crate of tomatoes at Ksh. 300, which they had previously been selling at over Ksh. 2,500.

Kangai residents, who said they supply Nairobi County with tomatoes, are worried because the tomatoes are ready for harvesting but they are not able to find a market.

Worried Kirinyaga tomato farmers who hail from Mwea constituency want the county government to find a lasting solution because they have nowhere to sell their commodity.

“It has seriously affected us and we are urging the government to intervene,”‘ Dennis Waweru said.

“The commodity is rotting in our farms while we are feeding others to our livestock.”
