Gathoni Wamuchomba Rebukes Kanyagia for ‘Deceptive Disappearance’
Outspoken Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has strongly criticized activist Ndiang’ui Kanyagia, accusing him of misleading the public and trivializing matters of national security.
Her remarks come in the wake of revelations that Kanyagia, who was reported missing for several days, had actually gone into hiding voluntarily—without informing his family, legal team, or supporters.
In a firm and disappointed tone, Wamuchomba expressed her frustration, saying she had genuinely joined the campaign for Kanyagia’s safe return, believing he had been abducted or harmed.
“We fought for your release with pure intentions,” she said, addressing Kanyagia. “You turned our voices of concern into a false victory.”
She noted that many, including herself, risked credibility by raising alarms over what now appears to have been a self-orchestrated disappearance.
“You owe Kenyans an apology,” she stated, further announcing that she would withdraw her earlier social media post and any previous accusations she had made regarding his whereabouts.
Wamuchomba emphasized that incidents like this make it difficult for leaders and the public to rally around genuine cases of enforced disappearances or threats to civil liberties.
“Security is not a matter to play with,” she warned, adding that moving forward, she would be more cautious before endorsing similar claims.
Her comments reflect a broader wave of disappointment from political leaders and civil rights advocates who had amplified Kanyagia’s story, only to discover it may have been manipulated for personal or political motives.
The backlash could have long-term consequences for how future allegations of disappearances or political persecution are received in Kenya.
For now, Wamuchomba’s message is clear: credibility once lost is difficult to regain, and public trust must never be toyed with.
