Dedan Kimani, Kimani Mbugua’s father is reported to have been imprisoned since February for allegedly extorting someone.
The former Citizen TV and NTV journalist passed away on October 14, 2025, at a mental health rehabilitation centre in Mombasa, where he was receiving treatment.
The prominent media personality and TikToker had openly shared his ongoing struggles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse before his death.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who helped him return to rehab, and content creator Oga Obinna led Kenyans into mourning following his tragic death.
YouTuber Vicky Vikinah shared that late Mbugua’s father behind bars since February after son’s death.
She shared that she has being alerted by family about Mbugua’s dad and remains in prison and proven not guilty.
“Kimani Mbugua’s dad was arrested in February 2026, and he has been in prison. According to him, he was arrested due to extortion.
But according to him, he is also innocent. He said that he was being framed.
I was informed about his arrest last month, at the end of April.
I tried to inform the relevant people, but it became so hard.
And you know some of these cases can be hard. That is why, as a media personality, the only choice I was left with is to put it out publicly so that if you are a lawyer or can help, you can go to Nairobi West Prison,” she said.
Vicky further said she has no idea and how to help, she has requested those able to help they can help out.
“The only thing he asked me was to share it publicly so he could get help. If you know you can help him, just go to Nairobi West Prison and ask for Baba Kimani,” she further said.
