Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli attracted widespread attention during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations after appearing in an outfit that departed from his familiar fashion style.
The veteran trade unionist attended the national celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, dressed in a black kaftan-style outfit featuring white vertical stripes, a Mandarin collar and loose-fitting, long sleeves.
He completed the look with brown loafers and his trademark dark sunglasses. Atwoli was also seen carrying a red umbrella as he made his way through the event, accompanied by a bodyguard.
His appearance quickly became a subject of discussion online, with many Kenyans comparing the outfit to the tailored suits, colourful shirts and gold accessories that have become part of his public image.
Some social media users expressed surprise at the change, with others directing their comments at his wife, Mary Kilobi, who is often associated with the COTU boss’s public appearances.
One commenter wrote, “Kilobi amelalia kazi buana! Atwoli our fashion icon ameanguka,” suggesting that the outfit did not meet expectations set by his previous appearances.
Another social media user questioned the design, comparing it to traditional garments and wondering whether it suited the veteran trade unionist.
However, the reaction was not entirely negative. Some Kenyans defended Atwoli’s choice, arguing that the loose-fitting garment could have offered comfort during the outdoor national celebrations.
Atwoli has built a recognisable public image through his distinctive dressing, particularly during major national events such as Labour Day and Madaraka Day celebrations.
His fashion choices frequently attract public attention, making his latest appearance another talking point beyond the official activities at the Eldoret venue.
Despite the mixed opinions, the discussion demonstrated how closely Kenyans follow the public appearances of prominent figures, with Atwoli’s outfit generating considerable online conversation.
