Detectives investigating the brutal murder of a teacher in Mumias have turned their focus to two bank tellers. The late Roseylda Akinyi was attacked shortly after withdrawing Sh285,000 from a bank in Mumias town.
According to investigators, CCTV footage shows Akinyi being followed by suspicious individuals while inside the bank. Two of the men were seen interacting with a bank teller and a security guard before the incident.
Regional DCI boss Njeru Nthiga confirmed that Akinyi was not shot, as earlier reported. She was stabbed with a sharp weapon that pierced her chest, damaging a major artery.
The assailants trailed her from the bank and struck just a kilometre away. One suspect reportedly pretended to inquire about a non-existent loan, while another sought help claiming a mobile money error—possibly as a distraction.
Police believe the killers may have received inside information. “We suspect collusion involving the bank staff, guard, or even the boda boda rider who was with the deceased,” said Nthiga.
Investigators are analyzing the teacher’s phone and reviewing more footage to track down the culprits. The boda boda rider, said to be a relative, will also be questioned.
DCI has not ruled out the possibility that the suspects were scouts for the real killers. With multiple leads and growing evidence, police remain hopeful about cracking the case.
“We’re exploring all options,” Nthiga assured. “This is a painful incident, and justice must be served.”
