Born in a political family, Kilifi County Deputy Governor Flora Chibule Mbetsa has followed the footsteps of her legendary father into the murky world of politics.
Today, she is one of the most visible female leaders in the Coast region given her good working relationship with her boss, Governor Gideon Mung’aro.
Born in Rabai, Kilifi County, her father, Dr Chibule wa Tsuma made a name for himself in the 1970s and 1980s when he stormed the country’s politics.
Dr Chibule served as Kaloleni MP for two terms before losing his seat during the infamous Mlolongo system of election in 1988.
In 1992, Dr Chibule, the Makerere University- trained medical doctor unsuccessfully ran for President. Though he lost, he had made a name for himself as one of the most consequential politicians in the history of Kenya.
In Parliament, the now 83- year old Dr Chibule was one of the most vocal and radical MPs. Alongside others like the then Ugenya MP James Orengo, they earned a moniker of ” Seven Bearded Sisters ” by the then Attorney General Charles Njonjo.
Though Dr Chibule is long retired from politics, but in her daughter, she has a worthy political heir.
As Deputy Governor, Flora Chibule is a heartbeat away from the Governor seat. Her ascension to the top county position will no doubt be a source of pride for her father.
