The Kikuyu Council of Elders has firmly opposed the formation of a private security group by former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, warning that the move poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the Mt. Kenya region.

Speaking at a press conference, Council Chairman Wachira Kiano criticized the initiative known as Jeshi calling it unnecessary, unlawful, and politically motivated. He emphasized that matters of security are constitutionally under the mandate of the state, not private individuals or groups.

“There is no justification for creating such a group,” said Kiano. “We have the police and other state agencies mandated to protect leaders and citizens. This attempt to form a militia is reckless and risks destabilizing the peace we have worked hard to maintain.”

Njenga announced the launch of Jeshi earlier this week, claiming the outfit would provide security for Members of Parliament and other leaders operating in the Mt. Kenya region. However, the move has drawn strong backlash, particularly from leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is currently consolidating political support in the area ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Kikuyu Council reaffirmed its support for Gachagua’s leadership, warning that unregulated private security initiatives risk dividing the community and undermining lawful governance structures.

“We urge leaders to work within the law and protect the peace and unity of our region,” Kiano added.

The controversy highlights growing political tensions within Mt. Kenya as various factions position themselves for influence ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
