Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka are set to conduct a series of rallies in the Kibwezi West Constituency on Friday, June 6, 2025. Kibwezi West is represented in the National Assembly by Chap Chap MP Mwengi Mutuse, a young lawyer who initiated the impeachment motion against Gachagua last year.

This marks Gachagua’s first visit to the constituency of the MP who presented the motion leading to his ousting, which ended his term as the nation’s second-in-command.

On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Mutuse called on Gachagua to show respect for the residents of Kibwezi West during his upcoming visit.

While addressing an empowerment initiative in Kitui East, Mutuse underscored that the rallies should not devolve into opportunities for attacking other leaders.

“As you have observed, we have refrained from insulting anyone here, and we expect them to do the same by not undermining other leaders,” he further noted.

Gachagua and Kalonzo’s tour on Friday is perceived as part of a growing resistance against President William Ruto, who is currently collaborating closely with Mutuse and his former party leader, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.

Mutua, a long-time political opponent of Kalonzo, has previously leveraged his Maendeleo Chap Chap party to exert influence within the Ukambani region.

The visit to Kibwezi West comes just days after Kalonzo entertained a group of prominent opposition leaders including Gachagua at his Tseikuru residence in Kitui County on May 29, 2025.

This significant gathering, the first of its kind at Kalonzo’s rural home in many years, signified the start of an intense contest for the Ukambani vote in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
