Today, there was chaos and panic in Mutarakwa, Kiambu County, after a lorry lost control and crashed into a building that housed a local church on Sunday morning.
Several people are feared dead following the shocking accident that occurred just as a church service was underway.
According to witnesses, the lorry, which was reportedly carrying building materials, was speeding downhill when its brakes failed.
It veered off the road, hitting several motorbikes before ramming into the church building. The impact caused part of the structure to collapse, sending worshippers screaming and scrambling for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the pastor, who was preaching at the time, narrowly escaped death as the roof caved in behind him. “It was like a movie.
Everyone ran in different directions. We heard a loud bang, and within seconds, dust and debris filled the room,” said one church member who managed to escape with minor injuries.
Emergency responders and locals rushed to the scene to rescue trapped victims. Police confirmed that several people sustained injuries and were rushed to Tigoni Hospital.
Residents have called on authorities to install speed bumps and enforce strict traffic regulations in the area, noting that accidents along the Mutarakwa road have become frequent due to reckless driving and poor road conditions.
As investigations continue, the once peaceful church now stands in ruins—a grim reminder of how a Sartday meant for worship turned into a tragic day of fear, destruction, and loss.
