Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was unanimously chosen as the leader of the Linda Mwananchi movement, as the political outfit continues to position itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on K24 Siasa, Khalwale said the decision was reached during a meeting attended by all the people who were expected to participate in the discussions. He dismissed suggestions that the leadership decision was made without the involvement of key figures within the movement.
According to Khalwale, everyone who was expected to attend the meeting was present, giving the gathering the opportunity to deliberate on the leadership question and reach a decision on Sifuna’s role.
He also addressed the absence of Siaya Governor James Orengo, saying the governor had sent his apologies for failing to attend the meeting. Khalwale’s remarks appeared aimed at clarifying the circumstances surrounding Orengo’s absence at a time when political alliances and movements are taking shape ahead of the next elections.
Sifuna has increasingly featured in discussions surrounding the emerging opposition political formations, with his supporters positioning him as a possible presidential contender in 2027. The Linda Mwananchi movement has also been at the centre of discussions about a new political vehicle and the possibility of bringing together leaders seeking an alternative political direction.
Khalwale’s statement provides further details about the meeting and the process through which Sifuna was selected to lead the movement. His comments also indicate that the absence of Orengo was communicated in advance rather than being an unexplained withdrawal.
