Eddy Sasa, a Kenyan cybercafé owner, won the US Diversity Visa (Green Card) lottery, a dream opportunity that promised a new life in America. Unfortunately, a series of mistakes during the application process cost him and his family their chance to relocate.
Eddy and his wife first learned about the DV program through customers who came to their cybercafé to apply. With little knowledge of the process, Eddy submitted one joint application, unaware that couples could file separate entries to increase their chances. This marked the first major error in their journey.
After being selected, Eddy received instructions from the Kentucky Consular Center but faced delays since he and his family had no passports. While applying for the documents, they encountered a rogue agent who tried to extort them. Although immigration officials helped recover the documents, they contained errors that caused further delays.
During their visa interview at the US Embassy, issues arose regarding their youngest child, who was born after the DV application, and their recently acquired marriage certificate. The consular officer questioned the legitimacy of both, ultimately denying the family’s visas. Eddy spent over Ksh 140,000 on the process and was advised to reapply in the future.
