Captain Mwangi

Captain Waweru Mwangi, a Kenyan commercial pilot who once considered becoming a Catholic priest, says his life changed after 34 years of marriage when a betrayal he never anticipated began to unfold in silence and speed.

For decades, Mwangi believed his relationship with his wife was stable, even if the arrangement was not always easy. He flew for a living, earned income, and by his account regularly sent money to an account she managed.

He says their shared plan extended beyond day-to-day survival. According to him, he also allegedly took out a loan that the couple used to establish a school, a venture his wife then ran. To many observers, the marriage and the projects behind it looked like a working partnership built on mutual effort.

But Mwangi now says cracks began appearing around 2016. He described a pattern of escalating disagreements at home, particularly during periods when he was away between flight contracts and had more time in his personal life. At the time, he says he tried not to assume the worst, even as he noticed his wife gradually pulling away emotionally.

Still, it was not distance or arguments that signaled disaster, he said. Instead, he points to a single unexpected call as the moment everything shifted.

Mwangi says the turning point came from their security guard at their Kileleshwa home.

The guard telephoned him to ask whether he had dispatched anyone to collect items from the house.

Confused, Mwangi pressed for clarification, and the guard informed him that movers were loading household belongings onto a lorry.

Alarmed, Mwangi abandoned what he described as an ordinary midday routine in Dagoretti and rushed back to the home. When he arrived, he immediately instructed the guard not to open the gate until he reached the property.
