Kenyan makeup artiste Dennis Karuri has opened up about his past, sharing throwback photos that showed a different side of his life before he ventured into modelling and makeup. Karuri reflected on his journey in a candid TikTok video, taking followers through some of the experiences that shaped him.
Karuri studied agribusiness economics at university and described himself as masculine and mature during his campus years. At the time, he said beauty was far from his plans, and he had no idea that makeup would eventually become a major part of his career.
After completing his studies, Karuri secured a job in a government office. However, the experience did not give him the sense of fulfilment he expected. He recalled questioning whether the office job was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life.
“Is this the job that I really want to do in my whole life?” he remembered asking himself as he struggled with the routine.
Karuri also spoke about one of the most difficult moments of his life, losing his mother while he was in his second year at university. He said the loss affected him deeply, especially because she had been one of his biggest supporters.
According to Karuri, his mother often encouraged him and believed he would become a superstar. She also told him that he would one day be successful enough to build her houses.
The makeup artiste later found his way into modelling and beauty, eventually becoming known for his makeup skills and distinctive fashion style. His recent video featured old photos that contrasted with his current appearance and public image.
