A Kenyan woman has shared a cautionary story on TikTok about paying for her own dowry and organising her entire wedding, urging other women not to repeat her mistake.
She said she was living in South Africa when she met her ex-husband, but chose to marry in her Kenyan hometown due to her cultural background.
To prepare, she travelled home and personally handled relatives, committees and the usual marriage procedures herself.
She convinced her family’s wedding committee to waive the traditional dowry, citing her late grandmother’s wish that her daughters never be “sold” through dowry payments.
She even brought in a witness to confirm the claim.
However, the groom was still expected to make customary contributions such as food and symbolic payments.
Since he had no relatives in Kenya, she hired a family and asked friends to pose as his relatives during the ceremonies.
Those friends contributed money and stood in on his behalf, but she ended up funding almost everything herself.
Her brother bought the wedding dress and cake, a friend donated chairs, the community covered food and the venue, and she arranged the bridal cars.
The only contribution from the groom’s side came from his cousin.
She said she “essentially married” herself, and now considers her actions foolish in hindsight.
She explained that dowry serves as more than a financial exchange — it acts as a cultural safeguard that holds a husband accountable to his in-laws.
She cautioned other women against funding a partner’s dowry, warning it strips away an important layer of protection within a marriage.
“Do not let a man contribute nothing, and do not fund his side of the dowry,” she advised.
She said she lacked parental guidance at the time, calling herself “a foolish young woman” who “didn’t know better.”
