The Nakuru High Court on Tuesday, April 28, ordered KDF, officer Captain Edwin Kaunga Muthomi to be committed to Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital after a psychiatric evaluation found him unfit to stand trial in a murder case involving his wife late Anita Mugweru.Kaunga, who was arrested in April, 14th, 2026, is accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Anita Mugweru, 29, in Nakuru County.

The late Anita, who worked as an accountant at ICS College, was reportedly attacked during a domestic dispute at their residence.

According to reports, the incident was witnessed by the couple’s four-year-old daughter and a househelp who were present at the time of the attack.

The shocking nature of the case has drawn widespread public attention.

Prosecutors told court that preliminary investigations suggest the confrontation stemmed from allegations of infidelity, which escalated into a violent altercation.

Kaunga is alleged to have used a kitchen knife in the attack, inflicting multiple stab wounds on deceased.

However, following medical and psychiatric assessments, experts concluded that the accused was not mentally fit to participate in legal proceedings at this stage.In its ruling, the court directed that Kaunga be held at Mathari Hospital for treatment & further observation, pending a review of his mental condition.

The court further stated that the case will be mentioned at a later date for further directions once a comprehensive medical report is submitted.

Meanwhile, the prosecution and defence teams were advised to await updates on the accused’s mental health status before proceeding with the trial.
