Kamba Woman

Kamba gospel singer Irene Tesh has spoken publicly about what she describes as a painful 10 year experience in her marriage to a pastor, alleging that the relationship affected both her personal life and her music career.

According to a report by TUKO.co.ke, Irene claims that her husband restricted her from performing at church events, crusades and overnight prayer meetings commonly known as keshas.

The singer was previously known within Kenya’s Kamba gospel music scene, where she performed at various religious gatherings. She also gained recognition through the song Nienda Ngwone Gai Wimbikie Syama, which she recorded alongside fellow gospel musician Stephen Kasolo.

Irene alleges that her music career took a different direction after she married her pastor husband. She claims he prevented her from travelling to crusades and keshas, limiting her opportunities to perform and connect with her audience.

According to her account, the restrictions eventually forced her to step away from singing, putting a prolonged pause on a music ministry that had previously been an important part of her life.

The singer describes the alleged treatment as a painful experience that continued for approximately 10 years.

Irene’s revelations reportedly attracted attention after she shared her experience on Mulisi TV, with the story subsequently spreading across social media.

Her fellow gospel artist Stephen Kasolo responded by appealing to fans and well wishers to support her financially. Kasolo reportedly set a fundraising target of KSh 600,000 to help Irene get back on her feet as she navigates the challenges she has spoken about.

The appeal also drew attention to the support she was receiving from members of the gospel music community.

Irene’s account has renewed conversations about the challenges women may experience in marriages, including within religious communities. Her allegations have also drawn attention to the difficulties that can arise when personal relationships affect an individual’s career, independence and ability to pursue their interests.

While Irene has publicly shared her side of the story, the TUKO report does not include a response from her husband. The allegations therefore remain her account of events and should be treated as such.

For now, her story has brought renewed attention to a gospel singer whose performances once reached audiences through churches, crusades and religious gatherings.
