Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has raised concerns over the ongoing process of appointing new commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). In a strongly worded message to ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kalonzo cautioned against any attempts to install a partisan electoral body, warning that such actions could undermine Kenya’s democracy.

Reflecting on past agreements, Kalonzo reminded Raila of their commitment during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process, where both government and opposition representatives pledged to ensure a transparent and inclusive recruitment process. He emphasized that the Principle of Consultation and Concurrence was crucial in maintaining electoral credibility.

He further referenced the 2008 Kofi Annan-brokered peace agreement, highlighting the importance of consensus in electoral matters. Kalonzo warned that should the UDA/ODM Alliance proceed with unilateral appointments, the opposition would view it as an attempt to rig the next elections in advance.

Reaffirming his commitment to defending democracy, Kalonzo stated that the opposition would resist any move that undermines the people’s will. He urged leaders to act in the nation’s best interest and uphold electoral integrity.
