Tension is rising within the Kalenjin community after over 200 elders from all 10 sub-tribes warned a group of Nandi elders and professionals to apologise or face a curse. The warning follows recent remarks made by the Nandi group demanding a meeting with President William Ruto and showing support for Governor George Natembeya.

Led by Samuel Arap Maritim, the Trans Nzoia Nandi Gaa Kaburwo chairman, the elders say the comments by the Nandi team were divisive and selfish. They insist that the group’s statements do not reflect the official position of the Kalenjin community.

The larger Myoot Council of Elders has given the Nandi group 14 days to apologise to the council and the Kalenjin community. If not, they plan to hold another meeting and pronounce curses on those involved.

“They must apologise within two weeks or we will curse them,” Arap Maritim said.

Richard Leitich, representing the Kipsigis community, also spoke out. He said the seven elders who supported Natembeya were only thinking about personal interests.

“They went there for their stomachs,” Leitich said. “President Ruto should ignore their demands.”

Edward Lagat, from the Marakwet sub-tribe, dismissed claims that the Nandi people are being left out in state jobs. He pointed to the appointment of several Nandi leaders as Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and board members.

“Their comments were aimed at damaging the image of the president,” he added.

Other elders, including James Sinja from the Sabaot sub-tribe and Job Araap Tuigong’ from the Tugen, warned that any elder who goes against the council’s stand will be punished.

William Sawe, chairperson of the Cherang’any sub-county, said the arrest of Governor Natembeya should not break the unity of the Kalenjin people. He urged the community to remain calm and let the courts handle the matter.

“We were united before Natembeya’s case. Let’s remain united and not be divided by this issue,” Sawe said.
