Jonathan Paul Mutua, a 29-year-old man, found himself in legal trouble after being accused of stealing goods worth Sh37 million from Baniyas Club Square during protests anti-government protest in Eldoret.

Initially, Mutua was released on a hefty Ksh 10 million bond, which sparked widespread reactions among Kenyans online. Many expressed concern over the severity of the bond amount imposed on him.

Mutua appeared before Principal Magistrate Cheronoh Kesse, facing charges of breaking into the club and handling stolen goods. The significant bond amount led to a public outcry, prompting the Judiciary to take swift action and make major changes.

The Judiciary responded to the concerns and reviewed Mutua’s bail terms. They acknowledged the urgency of the matter and scheduled a hearing for further directions on July 8th. Meanwhile, they revised the bond amount to a more reasonable Ksh 150,000 with one surety or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 200,000.

This swift action by the Judiciary demonstrates their responsiveness to public concerns and ensures that the bail amount is fair and just.
