MATIANGI

Kenyans have taken to social media to express mixed reactions following reports that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has resigned from a plum international job to focus on the 2027 presidential race. The news, which surfaced through political circles and social media posts, quickly sparked debate across online platforms.

Some Kenyans welcomed Matiang’i’s move, describing him as a strong leader with a proven record in public service. Supporters praised his no-nonsense style during his tenure in the Interior Ministry and claimed he could restore order and discipline in national leadership.

However, a section of users questioned his political strategy, suggesting he should have first built a grassroots base by running for a lower seat. “He should have gone for the governor seat in Kisii County first,” one Facebook user commented, reflecting a common sentiment that Matiang’i lacks a solid political base to mount a national campaign.

Others dismissed his presidential ambitions as unrealistic in the current political environment dominated by President William Ruto’s strong grip on state machinery and political alliances. Some expressed skepticism, stating that Matiang’i had kept a low profile for too long since leaving office and might struggle to reconnect with the electorate.

Meanwhile, his supporters fired back at critics, arguing that leadership should not be limited to regional politics and that Matiang’i’s experience in government positions him for national leadership. A few users even called on opposition leaders to unite behind him as a neutral candidate capable of challenging Ruto’s re-election bid.

The online debate continued to trend under hashtags related to 2027 politics, with many users eager to see how Matiang’i will officially launch his campaign. While reactions remain divided, one thing is clear—his return to the political scene has reignited public interest and speculation in the race to succeed President Ruto.
