Twins Barista Wyre and Barista Erick are emerging as inspiring figures in Kenya’s growing coffee scene, turning a painful childhood marked by loss into a story of resilience and entrepreneurship.
The identical twins, who now run a coffee training initiative in Nairobi, say their journey began under difficult circumstances after losing both parents at a young age.
Born in 2004 as premature babies, they recall how fragile their early days were, with Wyre weighing just 900 grams and Erick about one kilogram.
Their family tragedy struck early. The twins say their father died when they were only two months old, leaving their mother, Nancy Nyambura Waweru, to raise five children alone.
Life, they add, was a constant struggle as she worked to provide food, shelter, and education for the family.
Even with the hardship, they say their mother remained a source of strength, encouraging them to push through difficulties. That stability, however, was short-lived. While still in secondary school, the twins’ lives were shaken again when their mother fell seriously ill with cervical cancer. She later died when they were in Form Two, leaving the siblings orphaned.
With no steady source of income, the family faced years of uncertainty. The twins recall moments when school fees were difficult to raise and basic needs were often out of reach. They depended on relatives, friends, and well-wishers to complete their secondary education.
After finishing school, their lives took another turn when their uncle, Rev. Kamau Waweru, and aunt, Pastor Margaret Mirithu, took them in and supported their move to Nairobi. It is there that they began rebuilding their lives and eventually found their path in the coffee industry.
What started as survival has now grown into a structured coffee training platform that equips young people with barista skills and hospitality knowledge. The twins say their goal is not only to succeed personally but also to open doors for others facing similar struggles.
Their journey, they note, continues to be guided by the values their late mother instilled in them—perseverance, hope, and the belief that circumstances do not define one’s future.
Today, the duo is steadily gaining recognition in the hospitality space, using coffee as both a livelihood and a tool for empowerment among young trainees in Nairobi and beyond.
