Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya disclosed assets valued at approximately KSh243 million during her vetting by the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments.
The declaration attracted public interest because it marked a notable increase from the wealth she reported during an earlier vetting exercise. In 2022, Tuya placed her net worth at around KSh156 million. The latest figure therefore represents an increase of approximately KSh87 million.
Tuya attributed the growth largely to changes in the value of her assets, investments and business interests. She explained that the increase was not solely the result of income earned from her public service career, but was also influenced by appreciation in the value of properties and other investments.
Her reported financial interests span several areas, including real estate, agriculture, savings and investments. Over the years, she has disclosed property holdings in areas such as Nairobi and Narok, including land and residential developments.
Agriculture is also part of Tuya’s business portfolio, with dairy farming among the activities associated with her interests. She has additionally reported savings and investments through cooperative arrangements and other financial holdings.
The declaration formed part of Parliament’s scrutiny of Tuya as lawmakers assessed her suitability to continue serving as Defence Cabinet Secretary. Cabinet Secretary nominees are required to undergo detailed parliamentary vetting, during which legislators examine their qualifications, professional history, integrity, financial interests and ability to discharge the responsibilities of the office.
Tuya’s political career began at the county level when she was elected Narok County Women Representative in the 2013 General Election. She successfully retained the position in the following election before eventually rising to the Cabinet.
Prior to entering elective politics, Tuya built a professional background in law and development. She studied law at the University of Nairobi and the Kenya School of Law and later pursued postgraduate studies in the United States.
Her entry into President William Ruto’s Cabinet followed the 2022 General Election, when she was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry. She oversaw government initiatives involving environmental protection, forest conservation, climate policy and Kenya’s broader green agenda.
In 2024, Tuya was moved to the Defence Ministry during changes to the Cabinet. Her new role placed her at the helm of a ministry responsible for key areas of Kenya’s defence policy and the administration of matters relating to the Kenya Defence Forces within its constitutional mandate.
