Photographer Evans Ouma has shared warm memories of his time working with the late Raila Odinga, offering rare insight into the leader’s humility and kindness. Ouma, who served as Raila’s official photographer from 2015 to 2018, described those years as some of the most inspiring moments of his career. He said Raila was not only a political giant but also a man who valued people and treated everyone with respect.

In a recent interview, Ouma recalled that Raila’s humility stood out in every setting. Whether surrounded by dignitaries or mingling with ordinary citizens, he was always approachable and genuine. Ouma said the former Prime Minister made everyone around him feel comfortable, often taking time to engage in conversations with his staff and supporters. His warmth and openness, Ouma added, made him a leader who connected deeply with people.

Among Ouma’s fondest memories was the day the Supreme Court nullified the 2017 presidential election results. He described the atmosphere as one filled with relief and celebration. Raila, usually calm and reserved, was overjoyed and allowed his team to capture photos freely. Ouma said it was one of the few times he saw Raila in such a lighthearted mood, smiling and laughing with his staff. That day, he also surprised them with small tokens of appreciation as a gesture of gratitude for their loyalty.

Reflecting on his experience, Ouma said working with Raila was a rare privilege that shaped his outlook on leadership and humanity. He learned that true greatness lies in humility and service to others. To him, Raila Odinga will always be remembered not just as a political leader but as a compassionate mentor who led with heart and purpose.
