A 24-year-old gospel singer is battling for her life in hospital following a horrifying acid attack that has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over gender-based violence in Nairobi.
Mary Clare, a member of Redemption Ministers Kenya—a singing group affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Mabera Main Church in Migori County—was attacked along Ngong Road while heading home. According to reports, a man identified as Lucas Ochieng’ allegedly carried out the attack, reportedly acting on instructions from Clare’s estranged boyfriend.
Eyewitness accounts paint a chilling picture of the incident. Clare’s friend, Sarah Watiri, who was also injured during the attack, recalled the terrifying moment. She said Clare cried out for help, pleading for water as the corrosive substance caused severe burns.
Members of the public quickly responded, apprehending the suspect as he attempted to flee. In the chaos that followed, an angry mob reportedly beat him before he allegedly confessed to being sent by Clare’s ex-boyfriend. One witness claimed that during the confrontation, the suspect received a phone call, and the caller was heard asking, “Are you done with the work?” before the phone was smashed.
Police later intervened and rescued the suspect, taking him into custody at Kibera Police Station. Meanwhile, Clare was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
It has since emerged that Clare had previously reported threats and an assault incident in November 2025, raising questions about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the attack.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with calls for swift justice and stronger action against perpetrators of gender-based violence. Investigations are ongoing.
