National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has downplayed the recent political movements involving several leaders previously associated with President William Ruto’s administration, attributing the changes to individual and local political circumstances.
Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday night, Ichung’wah described the ongoing political realignments as a normal “transfer season” and said he was not worried about leaders moving away from the Ruto camp.
He singled out Gatundu South MP GG Kagombe, linking his political shift to an ongoing legal matter involving the shooting of a young man in Thika. Ichung’wah suggested that developments surrounding the case may have influenced Kagombe’s decision.
“I think there was some movement on that matter. And therefore, he thought probably political cover is the best thing to do,” he said.
Ichung’wah clarified, however, that he had not personally discussed the matter with Kagombe. He said the legislator had visited his office on Tuesday but failed to find him and later contacted him by phone.
The Majority Leader also discussed Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu’s decision to distance herself from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He noted that Marubu was elected as an independent candidate and had not formally declared that she was joining another political party.
According to Ichung’wah, Marubu’s position was influenced by disagreements with UDA’s leadership in Lamu County rather than a broader national political shift.
He also played down the significance of Nyeri Governor Irungu Kang’ata’s recent political movements, pointing out that the governor had changed political affiliations several times.
Regarding Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, Ichung’wah said his political position was expected because the governor had consistently been associated with the opposing side.
Despite the departures, Ichung’wah maintained that the broad-based government remains stable. He expressed confidence that the administration and its ODM partners would secure victory in the 2027 General Election.
