Environmental conservation champion Truphena Muthoni has responded to criticism over her outfit during the Mazingira Day celebrations, explaining why she chose the look despite the mixed reactions it attracted online.
Truphena became a topic of discussion after appearing on stage in a short pleated skirt, a green polo shirt and long colourful braids during the official event. While some Kenyans praised her confidence and the message she continues to champion through her environmental work, others questioned whether her choice of clothing was suitable for a national function.
Speaking during an interview after the celebrations, Truphena explained that her outfit reflected her personality and the sporting spirit with which she approaches life.
She maintained that the skirt was part of a sporty look and revealed that she had worn shorts underneath for comfort and decency. According to her, some people had focused too much on her appearance instead of understanding her choice of dressing.
Truphena explained that she dresses according to what makes her feel comfortable and confident. She also acknowledged that her appearance can influence how other people feel, although she appeared uncertain about what more to say regarding the criticism.
The environmental champion further explained that she views different aspects of her life as a sport, a mindset that also influences her fashion choices.
She added that she was comfortable experimenting with different outfits, including traditional Maasai attire, depending on the occasion. Her remarks suggested that she does not limit herself to one particular style of dressing.
However, Truphena admitted that her outfit during the Saturday celebrations had bothered some people. She acknowledged their reactions but did not offer a lengthy defence of her appearance, maintaining that she had felt good in what she wore.
She also revealed that she had bought the skirt herself, further emphasising that the decision had been a personal one.
Her response has continued to attract mixed reactions, with some social media users defending her freedom to express herself through fashion. Others have maintained that people attending official national functions should consider the expectations associated with such occasions.
The discussion has also raised questions about personal expression and public expectations, particularly when individuals appear at high profile events.
Despite the debate surrounding her outfit, Truphena remains known for her environmental conservation efforts. Her response has now shifted attention to how people balance personal style with the expectations that come with appearing at official public functions.
