Laikipia East Constituency Member of Parliament and former cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has alleged that Ruto shortchanged him in favor of Gachagua in the 2022 running mate selection.
Speaking in an interview with Inooro TV, Kiunjuri stated that Ruto denied him the chance of being his running mate after he rejected a demand to fold his TSP party and join UDA.
“Ruto summoned me for a meeting in his office where I found him in company of Boni Khalwale, Josephat Nanok, Johnstone Muthama, Hassan Omar and Gachagua. During this meeting, he confided in me that he would choose me as his running mate if I folded my TSP party,” revealed Kiunjuri.
According to Kiunjuri, the deal seemed too good, but he was not okay with the idea of folding TSP party considering the fact that Ruto himself had regretted folding his URP party in a merger with Uhuru’s TNA to form the Jubilee Party.
Gachagua who was present in the meeting allegedly backed up Ruto and demanded that the TSP party be folded.
After refusing to give in to this key demand, Kiunjuri says that Ruto proceeded to trash plans of choosing him as his running mate in the 2022 general elections. He proceeded to choose Gachagua instead.
However, information from those privy to the 2022 running mate race makes no mention of Mwangi Kiunjuri being on Ruto’s list of proposed running mates. Only Gachagua and Kithure Kindiki are said to have locked horns for the coveted slot.
