Kenyan tweep cum influencer Adam Maina has opened up on the good and the bad of opening a tour company when Covid struck.
Adam says the idea to turn Mtembezi Tribe into a full-time job was inspired by young people assuming that traveling is only meant for the rich.
The company first started out as a hobby before they turned it into a legit business.
Speaking during an interview with Mpasho Adam shared, ‘In 2019, I had no idea I would be running a travel company full time, but I had a grasp on travel needs and the Kenyan market, and what Africa has to offer.
We launched the business in 2020 as a hobby and grew our team with operational staff.
The business has grown predominantly through word-of-mouth, our digital platforms, and the incredible connections we have made.”
It frustrated me that people around my age group thought travel wasn’t accessible or affordable.
I thought we could build a bridge of confidence for the new generation of travelers to everyone’s benefit.
This is because Mtembezi Tribe’s main focus is impactful travel where we aim for our visitors to support local businesses, communities, conservation, and the environment.’

Adam says he is very surprised about the reception people have given towards his company, Mtembezi Tribe, considering how young the company is.
“I have been equally surprised and delighted by the people’s reception.
Starting in the middle of a pandemic was not easy; Travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, traveler entry requirements like vaccination certificates, and airline schedules have caused major concerns.
I honestly believe Africa has some of the best hospitality in the world.’
Asked what advice he would give someone looking forward to starting a tour and travel company, Adam advised, “Go for it. Don’t be surprised by who doesn’t support you – your friends and family may not be your target audience.
There are a bunch of different ways they can support you; by sharing your posts or by being present.
A lot of them are probably not going to understand your business anyway so don’t take it personally.
Good things take time. Deadlines and goals are important, but never rush if you’re not 100 percent happy.’
Adam says Mtembezi Tribe is all about designing a client’s travel plan to their specific likes, budget, and their timeline.
