Political commentator and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Party Secretary General Barrack Muluka has launched a scathing attack on Kenya’s Parliament, accusing it of operating under the tight grip of the Executive and abandoning its constitutional duty to hold the government accountable.

Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Muluka alleged that the Legislature has become an extension of State House, with lawmakers taking orders directly from President William Ruto.

He cited the President’s recent remarks warning MPs against voting against government positions, describing them as evidence of direct interference.

He was equally unsparing in his assessment of parliamentary committees, claiming they have morphed into extortion forums rather than genuine oversight bodies.

According to him, committee interventions are often motivated by self-interest, with members allegedly soliciting payments under the guise of investigations.

“When they hear a plane has crashed, the committee rushes to send letters to Cabinet Secretaries. Before long, the chair is pacing up and down ministry corridors, not to serve the public, but to collect protection fees,” Muluka alleged.

Muluka claimed that the Executive has enabled this culture, fostering a cosy relationship that undermines institutional independence and erodes accountability.

The result, he argued, is a Parliament more concerned with political loyalty and personal enrichment than with representing the people.

Kenya’s Constitution tasks Parliament with making laws, overseeing the Executive, and ensuring the transparent use of public resources.

However, Muluka warned that these responsibilities are being ignored, with the separation of powers increasingly blurred.

His remarks come amid growing public frustration over governance and corruption, and they are likely to reignite debate on whether Parliament is serving citizens or functioning as a political arm of State House.
